Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I find a club to join?
A: We are often asked how to go about finding and joining an Investment
Club. Unfortunately, due to the IRS & SEC rules governing
BetterInvesting, we may not distribute a
list of clubs to individuals.
Under IRS & SEC rules, an investment club is considered to be a
privately-managed mutual fund. BetterInvesting is a non-profit
organization created to educate individuals about investing and how to
make wise investment decisions. As a non-profit organization, we have
many strict rules and regulations we have to follow in order to maintain
non-profit status. Under other SEC and IRS regulations, as a non-profit
organization, we're not allowed to give any specific investment advice
or tell you where to invest your money. Providing
a list of members looking for clubs, or clubs looking for members may
be considered to be giving investment advice.
From our experience, the best way to find a club is through word of mouth. With hundreds of clubs in the Puget Sound region, you may already know someone who is either in a club, or knows someone who is in a club. Start asking around at work, at school and in every organization you belong to. Clubs are often more receptive to inviting a person to visit if the person is referred through a mutual acquaintance. Many investment clubs meet at libraries, senior citizens centers and other community rooms. You might ask the reference desk librarian, or the person who schedules the meeting rooms if any clubs do utilize their facilities. Putting a card up on a bulletin board at the library and other places advising you're looking for an investment club might aid in finding a club.
You might want to organize your own club - it's not as hard to do as you might think. Friends, co-workers, family members and other acquaintances might be interested in starting a new club with you. If so, the Puget Sound Chapter is glad to help you get off to a good start. Experienced chapter directors are available to assist you.Q: How much does it cost to join
BetterInvesting?
A: An all inclusive membership, which entitles a member to all website
tools and resources and the monthly subscription to BetterInvesting
Magazine is $79/year. Go to the
BetterInvesting website for more information.
